Social media also has shown to cause an increase in anxiety among teenagers. Everyone is always posting posting updates about where ever they are. Whether it's a cool vacation spot or at a birthday party, there are is always something on someone's Snapchat story or a post on Instagram that everyone who is there is posting about. The ability to instantly share something to the public, makes other kids feel excluded or like they are not wanted. Before social media, the only way to find out about something that you weren't invited to was by hearing everyone talk about it at school after the weekend. At that point, there was nothing that you could do about it, the event was in the past. Now that we can immediately see where everyone is and what they are doing, people have developed the fear of missing out, also known as "FOMO". Now teenagers are aware of when they are being excluded and they feel like they are missing out on important or fun events. According to Justin White from The Washington Post, "FOMO is most common in people ages 18 to 33" and "in one survey, two-thirds of people in this age group said they experience these fears." It makes sense that it is most common in this age group because technology has risen as these people have grown up and gotten older. This age group is also on social media the most.
Foursquare is another app that has recently been released for the public. According to Emily Fekete, Foursquare is "designed for users to check in to a location and share their location information with their friends." This enables people, especially teens, to track their friends to see where they are to see if they are being left out of an event. Overall, the use of social media and online apps, make it very easy to see when we are being excluded and causes teens to have a fear of missing out.
