Although social media can sometimes be perceived as a negative concept that has been introduced to our society, it can also have positive effects and make people happy. According to Todd Leopold from CNN News, "studies have shown that getting "likes" for Facebook posts actually results in a release of dopamine, a brain chemical associated with pleasure. Moreover, sad or moving posts can promote release of oxytocin, the "love hormone," which makes us feel protected." People usually post pictures when they go to a cool place and look their best. People want to create the image that they are thriving and that their lives are perfect. Each comment we receive that states something such as "you look great" or receiving hundreds of like on our Instagrams, boosts our self confidence and makes us feel accepted into society. Teenagers are always seeking others approval and want to be seen as important and that they fit in with social and societal norms.
Another great reason to use social media is to stay connected with family and friends. According to the Pew Research Center, "roughly two thirds (67%) of social media users say that staying in touch with current friends and family members is a major reason they use social media sites; about half say they use these sites to reconnect with old friends." According to a study conducted by John Jonides, most people report that they are motivated to spend time interacting on social media in order to stay in touch with family and friends. Keeping in touch with loved ones is important and helps to keep the family dynamic close. It can help to improve relationships and also help to rekindle old friendships as well. Social media is a great way to communicate and make our big world feel smaller.
